March - WEF challenge, Hockey, House Plays & Easter egg-citement
Shelly's March 2024 Newsletter
Hey!👋 I’m Shelly, I’ve been up to lots in March, and am excited to share it all...
I'm a South African 16-year-old passionate about robotics 🤖 holding the potential to create disruptive impact!🌎 What truly drives me to seek solutions is climate change & poverty.
World Economic Forum Challenge 💪
How do we utilize modern tools for education to help students understand global challenges in the world?
We were given this problem statement from WEF and exactly 30 days to submit a deck presenting our solution.
I must admit we procrastinated a bit and did most of the work in that last week before the deck was due.
I pulled my first all-nighter on the due date, well sort of - I had to take a 30-minute nap at one point because Shelly is not built for anything past 1 am. 😴
My incredible team pulled together really well
, . I cannot imagine working with a more committed group of girls, you guys make being project manager super easy. 🤗Typically I’m not the greatest fan of group work, especially for school projects because I end up doing all the work. But TKS group work is almost refreshing in comparison.
Hockey Highlight🏑
There is so much to learn through playing sport; dealing with disappointment, pushing your mental barriers, being gracious to yourself and not doing everything in your own strength.
And that’s just to name a few.
I played a total of 18 hockey matches this month, and the season is only just beginning.
In some matches I played absolute trash, in other matches I felt like I should be playing in the Olympics. It’s all part of the process. The frustration I experience on the hockey field is unmatched by anything else, but so is the joy.
A fun hockey highlight is the tour I went on. The main mission of the tour was ‘team bonding’. Mission declared successful.✅
Here’s a recap video from our hockey tour:
The spectacular spotlight🎭
I participated in the directing of ‘house plays’ for my school this term in which we surprisingly won!!🏆We did a one-act version of Alice in Wonderland winning the crowd's hearts with our humourous pantomime.
From script writing to early morning rehearsals it’s all worth it when you do that final bow.
Funny enough one of our cast members got sick 2 days before the performance, so I knowing all her lines already couldn’t resist the urge to step up and take her place as card number 2 🃏
Being on stage is magical ✨. There is nothing quite like it. The buzzing energy of actors around you, the stressed look of the stage directors, the laser focus of the tech team.
It is the closest thing to magic I have ever seen.
Easter egg-citement🐣
Easter is the most underrated holiday of the year for many reasons…
Firstly it’s an excuse to overconsume chocolate 🍫. Secondly, it’s a whole weekend long - name another holiday that takes place over a whole weekend. Thirdly, easter marks the cornerstone of my faith.
Without Easter, without Jesus dying and rising from the dead I have nothing. And don’t get me wrong, it doesn't make sense to me either. Why would God send His Son to die for such imperfect beings knowing they would reject Him anyway?
But I guess that’s kind of the point, if it made sense it wouldn’t have been a showcase of God’s true unconditional love.
This Easter I was challenged by the question:
Are you living the life Jesus died for you to have?
A lot of people are willing to die for what they believe in. But what challenges me most is ‘am I willing to live for it'? To die for God is one thing but to live for Him is another. Just some food for thought.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

What an action-packed month you’ve had…but inspiring as always! 👌
I think pulling all nighters on the last day of the challenge was a trend 😂
